A dented brass cryptex with four lettered rings, lashed inside a supply crate.
A dented brass cylinder no longer than a dagger, its four rings stamped with worn letters. A strip of oilcloth is wound around one end cap, and something rattles inside when it is shaken.
The quartermaster never trusted locks with keys.
